In 2008 the Obama campaign changed the political landscape by assuming they wouldn’t need Florida or Ohio to win the general election. They would court other states to make up the electoral difference. It's in the new book, King's Dream!
Now, in the 2012 campaign, the same assumptions are in play with toss-up states like New Hampshire, Nevada, Colorado and Virginia. If President Obama wins those four states, he will also need Iowa, or Wisconsin, or North Carolina.
